Singapore's Marina Bay Sands Casino exceeds expectations
The two new casinos of the city-state of Singapore and a long weekend because of a Buddhist holiday contributed to an increase of 30.3 percent of visitors in relation to the month of May of last year.
The Tourism Association of Singapore said Monday that 946,000 tourists visited the city in May, in April there were 939,000. For comparison, in May 2009 it was 726,000.
Singapore even wants to double these impressive figures by 2015, and hopes that the mega-resort casinos of Las Vegas Sands and Genting Bhd., which have been opened this year, help tourism and economic growth.
Las Vegas Sands, the most valuable casino company in the world, announced last week in a press release that its 5.5 billion U.S. dollar casino Marina Bay Sands in Singapore has exceeded expectations since its opening in April. According to estimates, up to 150,000 visitors per day can be expected.
